It’s Bad!

The contents of a Derby sex shop are to go under the hammer in Scunthorpe next week following the failure of the business.

The adult-only store . . . Ce Soir . . . went into liquidation a couple of weeks ago and the entire stock has been consigned to industrial auctioneers CJM Asset Management for disposal.

In excess of 5,000 items, ranging from lingerie to jokes and novelties, are to go under the hammer in the monthly auction at CJM’s saleroom in Brigg Road on Tuesday (March 31st).

“I guess you know a recession’s getting serious when sex shops start going under,” commented bemused auctioneer Matthew Cooper.

“It did sound a bit like a wind-up when the call came in but they are a retail firm like any other and when businesses cease trading their kit needs to be sold off to raise cash for the creditors.”

“In fact the company operated two sections, a news agents and sweet shop on the ground floor, with the adult store on the first floor. The contents of the news agency have also been sent to us for sale.”

“It is the first time that we have sold off the stock of such a shop, so it will be quite interesting to see what happens. Actually a lot of the lingerie and clothing, as well as many of the jokes and novelties, might well appeal to people like market traders, in addition to people in the sex shop business.”

Next Tuesday’s auction also includes thousands of pounds worth of stock from an upmarket bathroom centre in Ipswich that has been seized by bailiffs on behalf of the company’s landlords for non-payment of rent.

Matthew said: “They operated at the upper end of the market and we’ve been sent some very high quality kit, ranging from showers and baths to sinks, toilets, bowls, radiators and the like.”

“It is all expensive stuff by major names. There, is for example, one shower that retailed for close to £5,000.”

“In total we have 500 lots from the store and we have lotted everything up in such a way that members of the public have just as good an opportunity to bid as well as trade buyers. There could be some real bargains.”

The industrial section of the auction includes machinery and tools from a major international retained client. There is also a selection of modern office furniture and IT equipment.

In total the sale extends to 1,500 lots. The viewing sessions are on Monday (March 30th) 1pm-7pm and on Tuesday morning from 8.30am until the start of the sale at 10 am. Catalogues are available from CJM or can be downloaded from the firm’s website: www.cjmasset.com free of charge.
